Connections

Connections are directional arrows that link boards and notes together. They define your workflow, guide task movement, and help AI understand how your process flows.

What Are Connections?

A connection is a directional arrow linking one board or note to another. The arrow points from the source to the target, indicating the direction of flow. For example, you might connect a "Backlog" board to a "Sprint" board to show that tasks move from backlog into an active sprint.

Connections are more than visual — they carry workflow meaning. Tasks can move along connections, and the AI assistant uses them to determine valid movement paths.

Creating Connections

To create a connection between two items:

  1. 1

Hover the edge of a board or note

Move your cursor to the edge of any board or note. A small connection handle appears.

  2. 2

    Drag from the handle

Click the connection handle and drag outward. A preview arrow follows your cursor.

  3. 3

    Drop on the target

Drag the arrow to another board or note and release. The connection is created and saved automatically.

Adding Labels

Labels help describe what a connection represents — for example, "approved", "needs review", or "blocked".

  • Double-click the edge

Double-click anywhere on a connection arrow to add or edit its label. Type your text and click away or press Enter to save.

  • Right-click context menu

Right-click the edge and select Add Label (or Edit Labelif one already exists).

Context Menu

Right-click any connection to open a context menu with the following options:

  • Add / Edit Label

Add a descriptive label to the connection or modify an existing one.

  • Delete

Remove the connection entirely. This does not affect the linked boards or notes.

Deleting Connections

There are two ways to remove a connection:

  • Select + Delete key

Click a connection to select it, then press Delete or Backspace to remove it.

  • Right-click menu

Right-click the connection and choose Delete from the context menu.

Workflow Significance

Connections are not just decorative — they define the allowed movement paths for tasks. When you drag a task from one board to another, is.team uses connections to validate that the move follows your defined workflow.

For example, if "Backlog" connects to "In Progress" and "In Progress" connects to "Done", tasks follow that path. This keeps your process structured and prevents tasks from jumping to unexpected stages.

AI & Automation

IS.AI, the built-in AI assistant, uses connections to understand your workflow topology. When you ask the AI to move a task, it follows the connection graph to determine the correct destination. This means your canvas layout directly influences how automation behaves — well-connected boards lead to smarter AI actions.

Info

Connections are directional — the arrow shows the flow direction from source to target. Make sure your arrows point in the direction work moves through your process.
